Bible Study: 1 Timothy 3

Timothy is in Ephesus. As Paul had come to Ephesus, he had found that things were sort of in disarray as far as the church was concerned. The things that Paul expressed as his fears when he talked to the Ephesian elders in the twentieth chapter of Acts, had become a reality. There had been false doctrines and all that had sprung up--factious types of groups. So as Paul left Ephesus to go over to Macedonia, he left Timothy there to more or less set in order the things of the church.In verse fifteen, Paul sort of expresses the background to this particular chapter. He is wanting to come back, but he said if I tarry long that you may know how that you ought to behave yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and the ground of truth.So church order is what Paul is dealing with here in the third chapter and especially in the establishing of men, spiritual men, to oversee the things of the church.
